FILM:
ELECTRONIC MEETS FOLK
Seamlessly merging into a live performance by Krantinaari.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Krantinaari's music weaves together Hindi, and Kannada to take on some of India's most pressing social realities: gender inequality, the climate crisis, and the lives of tribal and marginalized women.
She carved out a distinctive voice in Indian hip-hop, rapping about women's empowerment, sustainability, and education with a flow that moves fluently between languages and registers.
Krantinaari co-founded India's first all-female hip-hop collective, Wild Wild Women, which brings together emcees, breakdancers, and graffiti artists under one roof. She has performed at Denmark's Roskilde International Music Festival - a first for Indian hip-hop ! -and completed the OneBeat fellowship residency in the USA, taking her work to genuinely global stages. Rolling Stone India Her discography includes the landmark self-titled debut "Krantinaari" which became something of a women's anthem, as well as more recent releases like "Anushasan" and "Roots" each pushing further into experimental territory while staying rooted in social commentary.
ABOUT THE FILM:
Mumbai-based rapper @krantinaari is amplifying women folk artists across India through her @soundofwomen_ project with @charuhariharan. They travel to communities where women’s voices are often unheard and where a career in music once felt impossible.
With Studio Monkey Shoulder, Kranti journeyed through Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on a mobile studio bus, living with these communities and recording samples for FolkSoul - a compilation inviting producers worldwide to reinterpret traditional folk samples through contemporary sounds.
Kranti also created opportunities for these artists to perform on stage - hosting community showcases in the region that sparked the inaugural @agraartsfestival, and bringing rural folk artist @hemntiipithauraagddh to Mumbai to perform at @bonobobandra for the Sound of Women finale showcase alongside her hip hop collective @wildwildwomen_ and DJ @smokeysound who contributed a track to the album.
Watch this video to follow Kranti’s journey and see the impact Sound of Women is having both locally and globally.
